PVC Elvaloy

The PVC Elvaloy membrane was first marketed in 1989. Elvaloy is a unique alloy of PVC resin and Elvaloy KEE from Dupont. This combination of materials forms the perfect balance of cost, performance and provides the building owner with the best value for his money.

What is Elvaloy and how does it enhance PVC?

PVC in its natural state is a hard polymer with limited flexibility. The standard technology for making PVCs flexible is to add plasticizers. These are liquids of varying formulas and specific gravities. The degree of flexibility and the service life of the PVC membrane can be affected by UV, heat, chemical contamination and environmental conditions. This process can be controlled by the use of expensive, high-end plasticizers.

Elvaloy is different from the conventional plasticizers. It is a solid pellet, which when blended with another solid makes the whole mixture flexible. It has to do with the different viscosities of the two materials. And, because it is a solid, it cannot migrate out of the sheet. Since it does not migrate and cannot be extracted, it stays flexible, functional and if damaged, repairable. Once it has reached the end of its service life, it can be recycled into something new.

Quite often, building owners are unaware of the things which can affect the performance of roofing membranes. Manufacturing plants, restaurants, airports and buildings like schools and hospitals are exhausting vapors or liquids on their roofs, which will destroy commodity roofing materials like EPDM and TPO. These contaminates can also accelerate the loss of plasticizer from a regular PVC and can cause EPDM and TPO to swell up and break down. Because Elvaloy cannot be extracted, it stands up to environmental conditions and/or chemical contamination.

Bottom line, the use of Elvaloy has a very positive benefit to the overall performance of a PVC membrane. PVC  roofs are the best single-ply roofs and Elvaloy makes them even better.
